Household Hazardous Waste Facility

HHW facility open Wednesday through Saturday by appointment only

The Household Hazardous Waste Facility, adjacent to the Transfer Station and located at 3803 Chautauqua Avenue, is now open to residents by appointment only. It serves as a collection point for everything from pesticides to kerosene and paint removers. The facility will be open by appointment to Normanites with proof of residency from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday each week. There are no associated costs to utilize the facility.

EXAMPLES OF ITEMS TO BE ACCEPTED AT FACILITY: aerosol products, batteries, corrosive products, flammable products, light bulbs, paint, oxidizers, poisons, propane and reactives. Examples of products taken include automotive items such as car and motorcycle batteries, brake fluid, car cleaners, car waxes and polishes, diesel fuel, gasoline, engine degreaser, power steering fluid, radiator flushes, and transmission fluids; battery items such as alkaline batteries, rechargeable batteries, lead acid batteries, lithium ion batteries, nickel cadmium batteries, and others; lawn and garden products such as fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, roach and ant killers, rodent poisons, and weed killers; household products such as abrasive cleaners, aerosols, ammonia-based cleaners, bleach, CFLs, degreasers, deodorizers, disinfectants, floor cleaners and waxes, kerosene, furniture polish, LED light bulbs, laundry products, moth balls, oven cleaners, pool chemicals, rust and spot removers, silver cleaners, and toilet and drain cleaners; and paint, hobby and pet items such as caulks, glues and cements, flea powders, collars, shampoos and sprays, helium tanks, lacquers and stains, latex paint (that is not dried out), mineral spirits, oil-based paints, paint removers and strippers, photographic chemicals, resins, fiberglass and epoxies, varnishes and wood preservatives.

EXAMPLES OF ITEMS THAT CANNOT BE ACCEPTED AT FACILITY: Radioactive or PCB waste, pharmaceuticals, medical and biomedical waste (with the exception of home-generated sharps in approved sealed containers), asbestos, industrial or commercially generated wastes, putrescible waste, radioactive material, bulky and non-hazardous waste, ammunition/explosives (with the exception of small arms ammunition and fireworks), electronics, and unknowns. The transfer station has an area that takes motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, cooking oil and tires.

Tires, oil, oil filters, used cooking oil/grease and antifreeze are accepted, at no charge, year-round at the Transfer Station, 3901 Chautauqua.
