Two-part compost workshop to be held as part of the City of Norman's Resiliency Education Series

The Division of Environmental Resilience and Sustainability (DoERS) at the City of Norman will host a two-part compost workshop on November 12 and November 19 as part of the Resiliency Education Series, an initiative created to share knowledge about adapting to change in ways that help preserve the environment.

“One session will be hands-on at the Learning and Environmental Advancement Facility (LEAF), 333 Bratcher Miner Road, and one session will be in a classroom setting at the City of Norman Development Center, 225 N. Webster. The community is welcome to attend one or both sessions, which are offered at no cost,” said Manager Michele Loudenback. “Composting is a resourceful way to recycle some items we generate at home all year long, such as food scraps or yard trim. There are many benefits of composting and we are very excited to share them with the community.”

The first session of the two-part workshop is hands-on and will be held from 1-4 p.m. on November 12 at the Learning & Environmental Advancement Facility (LEAF), 333 Bratcher Miner Road. Participants will learn how to build two different types of compost containments – pallet and hardware cloth – and will learn ways to manage and maintain their compost piles for the greatest eco benefit. All participants will get to use tools to help build actual bins to be used in the future at LEAF.

The second session of the two-part workshop is a classroom experience from 1-4 p.m. on November 19 in the City of Norman Development Center, 225 N. Webster, and participants will receive in-depth information about compost, its characteristics, and on how to optimize output. Microscopes will be available for attendees “to get to the nitty gritty about this amazing substance,” Loudenback said.
