Norman Police Investigate Fatality Collision at 36th Avenue NW and Pioneer Street

The Norman Police Department responded to a report of a critical injury collision in the area of 36th Avenue NW and Pioneer Street at approximately 9:35 p.m. Tuesday. The preliminary investigation into the collision indicates that a Nissan Armada traveling northbound on 36th Avenue NW approaching Pioneer Street struck a pedestrian walking northbound on the east side of the roadway in dark clothing. The driver of the vehicle immediately stopped and contacted police.

The pedestrian, later identified as 24-year-old Hunter Smith, was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Nissan Armada, later identified as 39-year-old Julie Lam, was not injured as a result of the collision. Lam exhibited no indication of impairment.

A portion of 36th Avenue NW was closed between Indian Hills Road and Franklin Road for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated. The collision remains under investigation by the NPD/OUPD Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team.
