“Mechan 14” public art piece to be unveiled on December 5, 2023

The next Norman Forward quality-of-life initiative through public art will be unveiled at Reaves Park (2501 Jenkins Avenue) on December 5, 2023, and all are invited to attend. The event will begin at 9 a.m.

“Mechan 14," a 15-ft. robot sculpture by artist Tyler Fuqua, conveys a message of joy, play, and year-round memories in Reaves Park. As the first giant robot in Norman, it offers a dynamic presence in the park, with interchangeable parts that allow it to transform from a Home Run Mechan with a baseball bat to a Bold Knight Mechan with a sword.

"Seeing this giant robot really is an awe-inspiring sight! It's a testament to the joy and inspiration that art brings to our community, creating vibrant spaces that foster connection and lasting memories for all," said Jason Olsen, Director of Parks & Recreation.

At the event, community members are welcome to interact with "Mechan 14" up close, take pictures, and enjoy the spectacle day and night. The sculpture's eyes will light up after dark, enhancing the visual experience.
