Job Description

This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019.   This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.

Education and Experience:  High school diploma or equivalent. Any experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

License and Certifications:  Valid Oklahoma Commercial Driver’s License, Class B, and satisfactory driving record. 

Skills:  Interpersonal skills necessary to be courteous of fellow employees, citizens, and businesses while performing duties.

Essential Functions:  Works on the back of a truck and picks up trash/yardwaste on assigned route.  Manually lifts residential trash/yardwaste containers and empties contents into refuse truck. Acts as a ground guide and assists the Sanitation Worker II in the safe operation & collection of refuse and yard waste materials. Operates compactor mechanism on truck by manually pushing lever to start the automatic packing of refuse and/or yard waste.  Observes pick up area to determine whether area is free of refuse and replaces lid on empty cans.  Cleans refuse from street where spilling has occurred.  Operates pickup truck to pick up litter and illegal dump sites as well as delivery of polycarts.  Washes, sprays, and deodorizes public street trash containers and polycarts.  Interfaces with citizens in person or over the telephone regarding minor complaints or questions. Refers citizens to main office regarding bills, inadequate service, or related problems.  Works in a safe manner. Follows safety rules and safe work practices.  Uses safety equipment as required.  Conducts minor maintenance on refuse vehicles.  Cleans illegal dump sites.  Picks up trash on road sides and alleys.  Performs janitorial and maintenance duties.  May serve as back up driver for residential refuse truck. Performs related duties as required.

Mental and Physical Abilities: Ability to understand, follow and/or provide verbal and written instructions.  Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy (25-50 lb.) and heavy (50-75 lb.) trash/yardwaste containers and debris frequently.  Work requires continued walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.   Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance.

Working Conditions:  Frequent exposure of up to 80% of work time to dirt, dust, extreme weather temperatures, noise, and noxious fumes and odors, and potentially hazardous waste and chemicals.
