Solar and Energy Conservation

Solar energy and conservation play a vital role in building a sustainable future. Solar energy harnesses the power of sunlight to generate clean, renewable electricity, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Advances in solar technology and net metering programs are making it easier and more affordable for residents to adopt solar, while saving on energy bills.

Energy conservation is equally important—it reduces strain on power grids, saves money, and protects the environment by lowering emissions and conserving water resources used in energy production. From simple steps like switching to LED lighting and sealing air leaks to exploring solar solutions, every effort contributes to a greener, more efficient future.

Energy Conservation Tips

  • Turn off all unnecessary lights, especially in unused offices and conference rooms and turn down remaining lighting levels where possible.
  • Minimize energy usage during peak demand hours from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Buy Energy Star appliances, products, and lights.
  • Turn off your computer monitor and printer when you aren't using them.
  • Set your computer to go into the energy saving mode when not being used for extended periods of time.
  • Carpool, walk, bike or take public transportation.
  • Recycle more, both at the office and at home.
  • Last One Out Turns Off The Lights.
  • Don't allow vehicles to idle for more than 5 minutes.
  • Adjust the thermostat when you leave at night or for the weekend.
  • Set printers and copiers to two-sided printing.

Off-grid Solar-Powered Charging Stations

The first BEAM Charging Station Customer - Evan Rink

Through the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments' (ACOG) Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Public Fleet Clean Air Grant Funding, the City of Norman was able to install three BEAM solar-powered, off-grid level two charging stations. Two stations are located at Ruby Grant Park, as part of the effort to electrify the I-35 corridor, and one station is located at City Hall, as part of the effort to showcase and highlight alternative fuels. Along with providing the ability for plug-in electric vehicle users to charge their vehicles, these units can also act as power sources for other purposes, as needed, such as in the case of a large event or for emergency purposes. This ability to access the power, coupled with their mobility, helps provide for a robust emergency response.

Because the power generated is freely sourced from the sun, and since the stations were primarily funded through grant monies, electric vehicle users may charge their vehicles for free!

Evan Rink was the first customer to use the Ruby Grant Park charging stations!

City of Norman Solar Arrays

In fall 2022, the Norman Utilities Authority worked with a solar contractor to install two large solar arrays.  The 2.3 MW total installation is expected to offset 30% of the annual electrical needs for the next 25 years.
