The Norman Public Safety Cadet Program provides an educational training program for young adults on the purpose, mission, and objectives of law enforcement. The mission of the program is to provide smart and comprehensive knowledge to young adults, empowering them with valuable skills and insights in the field of public safety and law enforcement. 

The Norman Public Safety Cadet Program recruits young men and women throughout the year to join the program. Any individual who meets our requirements and is in between 16 and 21 years of age is encouraged to apply.

Norman Public Safety Cadet Program Information

What comes with being a Public Safety Cadet?

Members of the Norman Public Safety Cadet Program gain training in:

  • Arrests and Searches
  • Bomb Threats 
  • Building Searchers
  • Crime Prevention
  • Crime Scene Investigations 
  • Crisis Negotiations
  • Defensive Tactics
  • Domestic Crisis Intervention 
  • Felony Traffic Stops
  • Firearms
  • First Aid / CPR
  • Patrol Procedures

Cadets also have access to monthly ride-alongs with NPD Officers upon completion of a six month probationary period. Cadets must also be in good standing with all program requirements.

To apply to be a Norman Public Safety Cadet, please complete the application and return it in-person or by mail to the Norman Police Department.

All applications are reviewed to ensure that the applicant meets all criteria. A background check will also be conducted on all accepted applicants. 

Applicants who meet the necessary criteria and pass the background check will be required to complete a panel interview.

Qualifications to Apply

To apply, one must meet the following qualifications:

  • 16-21 years of age
  • Be enrolled in at least the 9th grade and remain enrolled through the 12th grade
  • Have parental consent if under 18 years of age
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher 
  • No prior felony convictions as an adult, not any prior juvenile adjudications for which would be a felony
  • Be willing to participate in the various activities including two hours per month of direct service to the department
  • Understand and be willing to obey all Norman Public Safety Cadet Program rules 
  • Be able to pass an interview board consisting of post advisors and ranking members of the Norman Public Safety Cadet Program
