Replacement of 60th Avenue NE Bridge complete

The bridge is reopen for travel as of April 22, 2025

The City of Norman is proud to announce the official reopening of the 60th Avenue NE Bridge – located between Rock Creek Road and Tecumseh Road – on April 22, 2025, marking a major milestone in the city’s commitment to infrastructure improvement and public safety.

The bridge reopening is the result of years of planning, collaboration and community support. It marks the first completed project of the voter-approved Bridge Maintenance Bond Program, passed by Norman voters in 2023 and allowing for essential funding to replace, repair and rehabilitate more than a dozen city bridges.

“Today’s reopening of the bridge represents more than just a return to traffic — it’s a celebration of progress, partnership, and public trust,” said Scott Sturtz, City of Norman Public Works Director. “The new 60th Avenue Northeast Bridge is safer, stronger and better equipped to serve the community for decades to come.”

PROJECT BACKGROUND

In a proactive effort to streamline infrastructure progress, City Council approved a contract with Garver Engineering for the bridge redesign on October 11, 2022. Just weeks later, the 80-year-old bridge was closed after a routine inspection report cited significant structural issues. A construction contract was awarded to K&R Builders Inc. on June 27, 2024. Major construction on the 60th Ave NE Bridge began on August 27, 2024.

Replacement of the former bridge means that load-postings are no longer necessary, as the new bridge can accommodate all modes of transportation. This bridge has been brought up to current transportation and safety standards. Some notable project elements are the realignment of 60th Avenue to adjust roadway back onto the section line, the addition of roadway shoulders for added safety and the adjusted elevation of bridge to meet both transportation and stormwater needs.

Upcoming Bridge by Bridge projects include the East Post Oak bridge replacement project, Main Street bridge rehabilitation project and Classen Boulevard bridge rehabilitation project.
