Policies for temporary dwellings approved by Norman City Council to assist residents impacted by area fires

The Norman City Council unanimously approved Resolution 2425-110 this week, which establishes policies for allowing residents affected by wildfires to inhabit temporary structures while rebuilding permanent structures.

At least six dwelling units in city limits were destroyed by fire this month, and the resolution serves as a mean of disaster relief while ensuring occupations protect the health and safety of Normanites. Similar to prior resolutions approved following natural disasters, citizens can live in a temporary dwelling unit that is located on the same lot as the permanent dwelling as repair or reconstruction occurs so long as the following criteria is met:

  • Temporary dwellings are limited to mobile homes, recreational vehicles, travel trailers, tiny homes, and structures permanently affixed to the ground.
  • Temporary dwellings must have adequate water, wastewater disposal systems, and electricity.
  •  Temporary dwellings may not be located within ten (10) feet of property lines, within site triangles, or over utility easements.

Affected property owners should apply for and receive a building permit for the new residence within a year from the date of the destruction of their permanent residence to be able to continue to occupy the temporary dwelling.

“Our hearts go out to all that have been affected by the wildfires,” said Mayor Larry Heikkila. “We want to uplift and support those families and community members that have lost so much, in all the ways we can.”
