The Norman Police Department (NPD) is investigating the in-custody death of 61-year-old Jeffrey Brake.
Officers responded to a request for a welfare check at approximately 9:29 a.m. Saturday in the area of McGee Drive and Rowena Lane. Once on scene, officers located Brake crawling in the roadway, exhibiting signs of being under the influence of narcotics. Brake was arrested without incident and then transported to a local hospital for treatment. Upon receiving treatment, Brake was transported to the Cleveland County Detention Center and booked in on a complaint of public intoxication (narcotics).
At approximately 7:09 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to a call for service at Norman Regional Hospital, 3300 Healthplex Parkway, regarding a welfare check. Once on scene, officers located Brake crawling on the ground near the ambulance bay. Hospital staff provided officers with documentation regarding his treatment and release from the facility. Brake was arrested without incident and was transported to the Cleveland County Detention Center on a complaint of public intoxication (narcotics).
Upon arrival at the Cleveland County Detention Center, Brake began to experience an apparent medical emergency. Upon recognizing the situation, officers requested medical and assisted with life-saving measures until EMSSTAT arrived on scene to take over advanced medical care. Brake was pronounced deceased at a local hospital.
There was no use of force involved in either of these contacts involving Brake.
The preliminary investigation indicates his death was likely due to a medical emergency. A complete investigation into the circumstances surrounding Brake’s death is ongoing.
