Norman Police Arrest Two in connection to Overnight Shootings

A uniformed patrol officer with the Norman Police Department encountered a suspicious person in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 1800 block of W. Robinson Street just after 2:30 a.m. on May 22. The officer observed a subject checking vehicle door handles in an apparent attempt to burglarize vehicles. The officer attempted to contact the individual and identified himself as a police officer. The officer issued verbal commands at which point the suspect turned and shot a firearm in the direction of the officer. The officer returned fire and the suspect ran from the scene.

Officers responded to establish a perimeter and conduct a search for the suspect. No one was injured during the course of the incident. At least one vehicle in the parking lot sustained damage.  

At approximately 7 a.m., the suspect vehicle was spotted in the 1800 block of W. Robinson Street. Officers stopped the vehicle and two 17-year-old males were taken into custody without incident.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined the same individuals were also involved in a drive-by shooting just after 12 a.m. on May 22 in the 100 block of W. Dale Street. An occupied residence was struck multiple times. No injuries were reported.

Both juvenile suspects were arrested on a charge of Use of a Vehicle to Facilitate the Intentional Discharge of a Firearm. The juvenile who shot at the officer was also arrested on one count of Shooting with the Intent to Kill.

The involved officer has been placed on routine administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.

The incident remains under investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division.
