Information: Temporary closure of Whittier Recreation Center

The City of Norman's Whittier Recreation Center, 2000 W. Brooks Street, has been temporarily closed due to the discovery of mold during the repair of a water line on December 16.

Mold was found behind the baseboard of a janitor closet and within bathrooms, as well as walls of certain offices and classrooms in the 55-year period facility. No mold was found in the gymnasium or the game room. The City of Norman is working with Norman Public Schools to relocate the students who utilize the recreation center for after-school care to areas inside Whittier Middle School, which is separate from the recreation center. Affected families have been contacted about pick-up changes.

Remediation contractors were immediately notified upon discovery and have sealed off the affected area. Samples of mold are being tested and test results are expected within 48 hours. The safety and well-being of all residents remains the topmost priority for the City of Norman. As additional information is made available, updates will be to this webpage at Normanok.gov.
