FIRE UPDATES - Norman, Oklahoma - March 2025

UPDATE, 10:14 AM 3/28/25: The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced the availability of low‑interest federal disaster loans to certain Oklahoma businesses, nonprofits and residents who sustained physical damages and economic losses from the severe storms, tornadoes and straight-line winds occurring from March 3-4. The SBA issued a disaster declaration in response to a request received from Gov. Kevin Stitt on March 21. Learn more here.

 

UPDATE, 9:10 AM 3/26/25: Policies for temporary dwellings have been approved by Norman City Council in order to assist residents impacted by area fires. Learn more here.

 

UPDATE, 1:40 PM 3/19/25: The National Weather Service in Norman has announced that much of the state, including the Norman area, remains under a RED FLAG FIRE WARNING. Sustained winds of 25 to 30, with gusts of 50 miles per hour can be expected throughout the day and into the evening. The potential for dangerous fires that can spread quickly continues.

 

UPDATE, 9:40 AM 3/18/25: The National Weather Service in Norman has announced that much of Oklahoma, including the Norman area, remains under a RED FLAG FIRE WARNING. Critical to extreme fire danger continues Tuesday due to windy and dry conditions. Southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 to 45 mph are possible. Minimum relative humidity values may be as low as 10 to 15 percent. 

If conditions warrant emergency communications, information will be posted on social media pages for the City of Norman, Norman Fire Department and Norman Police Department, as well as this City of Norman FIRE UPDATES webpage.

Residents are also advised to sign up for Emergency Alerts at Normanok.gov/AlertNorman to receive alerts via text message, email and/or voice message.

 

UPDATE, 10:39 AM 3/17/25: While, as of the morning of Monday, March 17, 2025, there are no wildfires reported in the Norman area, residents are reminded that the state remains under a RED FLAG FIRE WARNING. Strong winds and dry conditions are still forecast for much of the week.

UPDATE, 8:32 AM 3/15/25: All fires are 100% contained. Coordination for damage assessment by emergency management officials is being worked through. Resources remain available at CrossPointe Church, 2601 24th Avenue SE, for individuals in need. This site will be open until 10 PM today 3/15/25.

Those wishing to apply for recovery assistance can also contact the Red Cross at 1-800-RED CROSS. To avoid falling victim to scams, residents are asked to be cautious about unsolicited offers, verify information from official sources, and guard your personal information. Scammers also often impersonate legitimate charities and non-profits to collect donations. Individuals are asked to verify the legitimacy of online donation sites before providing funds or items. If you believe that you are a victim of any unlawful conduct related to disaster scams, please contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Unit immediately at 405-521- 2029 or toll-free at 1-833-681-1895 or ConsumerProtection@oag.ok.gov.

Relevant public information, instruction or resources will continue to be made available to the public at Normanok.gov.

 

9:57 PM 3/14/25: Fires are still being responded to in the Norman area, but most are considered contained. It is estimated that 7 homes and 20 outbuildings have been lost to fires. There are no reports of civilian injuries at this time.

Norman Residents can return to their properties in areas listed below, where previous evacuations were in place. EXCEPTION: Those living in the area of 156th Avenue SE from State Highway 9 and Imhoff should NOT return to the area (closed roads: Onyx Avenue, Garnet Road, Jade Street, Topaz Lane, Diamond Drive, Old Oilfield Road), as firefighting continues.

  • All people in the area of 120th Ave SE to Lake Thunderbird, between Rock Creek Road and Franklin Road

  • All people in the area of Etowah Road to State Highway 9, between 84th Ave SE and 144th Ave SE
    • Contained - Evacuation Lifted, Open to Residents only

Residents should remain aware, have working smoke alarms and evacuation plans, and call 911 if flames are seen. Access points may be set up to re-enter neighborhoods.

An evacuation shelter is still available at CrossPointe Church, 2601 24th Avenue SE. Individuals that were at a previous evacuation shelter at Little Axe Recreation Center, 1000 168th NE Avenue, have been relocated to CrossPointe Church.
