City Council approves items to advance the Groundwater Treatment Facility project

Items 22-24 of the March 25th Norman City Council Meeting – regarding the land use, zoning and preliminary platting of the City of Norman’s Groundwater Treatment Facility – have been unanimously approved by Norman City Council.

The groundwater facility, to be located in the area of Tecumseh and 36th Avenue NE, is a phased project to attain compliance with Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) requirements for disinfectant residuals within the distribution system in the short-term but with long-term site planning for future treatment systems as regulations become more stringent. The project has been planned for more than 10 years and the City and Norman Utilities Authority are excited to move forward in further strengthening the community’s water system. In June 2023, voters approved a water rate proposition that would allow for a portion of additional revenues to go toward the construction of this facility. Since December 2023, two public meetings with neighbors and stakeholders have been held. Several one-on-one meetings with neighbors were held as well, to ensure that facility construction and general operation will not cause major disruptions for those living in the area.

As additional progress is made on this project, information will be provided to the public at Normanok.gov.
