MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: One year of college or vocational/technical school or laboratory experience. Completion of one course in microbiology is preferred. A college degree is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications: Valid Oklahoma Driver's License and satisfactory driving record. Must obtain an Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality Water Lab Operator's Certification Class C within 6 months of employment. Class B Water Operator Laboratory License preferred.
Knowledge: General chemistry, microbiology, laboratory safety. Computer software applications including, but not limited to Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and Access.
Skills: Use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Access. Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with internal staff, the public, and other departmental staff in a courteous and friendly manner. Ability to pay attention to detail, notice when something is abnormal, and bring it to attention. Attentive. Work independently. Technical writing desirable.
Mental and Physical Abilities: Ability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work in a laboratory and interpret laboratory methods. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail with interruptions associated with answering phone or assisting the public with sample delivery. Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy (25-50 lb.) materials occasionally. Moderate mobility; duties are usually performed by combinations of sitting, standing and walking, climbing stairs; repetitive entry and exit of a vehicle. Long periods of standing are required. Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance.
Additional Information: Selected applicant must pass background investigation, physical examination, and drug screen. The work period of 20 hours per week is flexible but is expected to be mostly completed Mon, Tues, and Wed sometime during the hours between 7AM and 6PM.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Functions: This position will be responsible for assisting the lab tech and lab manager with sample collection, sample analysis, instrument calibration, instrument maintenance, data entry and reporting, lab cleaning, reagent prep, lab organization, inventory upkeep, addressing citizen concerns, and other tasks as assigned. Lab intern is required to practice laboratory safety and conduct themselves in a safe and courteous manner while in the field.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a laboratory and water treatment plant environment; however, time is spent outdoors or in the field (well houses, distribution, properties requesting assistance) approximately 50% of the time. Exposure to temperature extremes, dirt, dust, noise, etc. are expected approximately 35-50% of the time.
