Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Five years combined mechanical experience is necessary to gain the knowledge of the machinery, equipment, repairs and procedures of the department to perform maintenance and repair in the shop and on location.

License and Certifications: Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record.  Must obtain an Oklahoma Commercial Driver’s License, Class B within six (6) months of employment.  Must obtain an Oklahoma Commercial Driver’s License, Class A with N-T endorsement within twelve (12) months of employment. Master Automotive Service of Excellence (ASE) Technician possessing eight certifications in heavy-duty trucks within (12) twelve) months of employment. After (12) months, technicians will be eligible to participate in the ASE incentive pay program.   

Knowledge:  Supervisory techniques and methods. Procedures for diagnostics and repairing heavy duty trucks, construction equipment and light duty cars and trucks. Operating principles of diesel, gasoline and CNG powered equipment. Operating principles of hydraulic, electrical and battery powered equipment. Repair and maintenance knowledge of hydrostatics, power generation, diesel and gasoline powered equipment. Safety practices related to repair and maintenance of equipment. Operation of personal computer with Windows operating system. Ability to understand and interpret electrical schematics. 

Skills: Directing and reviewing the work of others. Reading and interpreting sketches, diagrams and instructions outlined in equipment repair manuals. Rebuilding parts. Diagnosing equipment malfunctions. Operating various hand and power tools and work aids. Good verbal and written communication skills. Advanced mechanical and troubleshooting skills required. Strong organizational skills. Good work habits; ability to present a favorable image for the Public Works Department and contribute to a team environment.

Duties and Responsibilities: Supervises personnel to include planning and scheduling of work, assigning work, instructing and training in methods and procedures, checking and approving work, and making recommendations regarding employee job performance. Inspects completed work of subordinates and insures departmental and safety standards are met.  Maintains all specialized equipment; maintains inventory of specialized equipment and hand tools. Determines equipment malfunctions and repairs or replaces parts to ensure continued operation of vehicle or equipment in field locations. Performs on-site welding repairs and operating acetylene torch. Maintains inventory of parts and consumables for both repair and maintenance; fabricates parts as needed to perform maintenance and repair; tracks and follows up on parts for outgoing jobs; ensures all parts are present before traveling to locations. Performs maintenance and repair work within time frames established by industry standards. Works safely and effectively with limited supervision. Acts as Supervisor in his/her absence for temporary period of time. Plans and organizes daily field repairs to insure minimum down time of essential equipment. Communicates all estimated labor times to supervisor in a timely fashion. Operates wreckers to tow in disabled vehicles. Performs repairs on diesel, gasoline, electric and compressed natural gas vehicles and equipment both on location and in the shop. Continually improves upon mechanical ability though study courses, education, and other training as they become available.  Performs other related work as assigned.

Working Conditions: Frequent exposure of up to 80% of work time to dirt, dust, extremes of temperature, and noxious fumes and odors.

Mental and Physical Abilities: Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail. Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy (25-50 lb.) materials, supplies, and equipment frequently. Ability to lift heavy (50-75 lb.) materials, supplies, and equipment occasionally. Work requires continued walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.  Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance.
