Traffic Counts & Transportation

Located along the vibrant Interstate 35 corridor, Norman forms the southern edge of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. Six major interstate exits on I-35, state highways 9 and 77, an Amtrak station in our historic Santa Fe depot, and the University's Max Westheimer Airport provide easy access into Norman. Norman is a short 20-25 minute commute to both Will Rogers World Airport and Downtown Oklahoma City, make it convenient for both travelers and local commuters.

Historic Growth Trends:

With over 132,000 residents, Norman is the third most populous city in the state of Oklahoma and part of the growing Oklahoma City metropolitan area. The Greater Oklahoma City metropolitan area has a total population of over 1.5 million, and remains one of the fastest growing metros in the country. As the county seat of Cleveland County, Norman serves as a regional destination for several surrounding communities. The population of Cleveland County, including in both it’s urban and rural areas, have grown significantly in the past few decades. Cleveland County’s estimated population in 2020 is 295,528.

New Housing Units:

Since 2000, over 12,000 new single family homes and 6,300 new multifamily units have been built in Norman. A recent housing study, part of our AIM Norman Comprehensive Plan, indicates an estimated demand for 23,000 additional housing units in the next 20 years.

Norman is home to a many public and private institutions that keep our economy ticking. As home of the National Weather center and the NOAA Severe Storms Lab, Norman is a major player in the weather and radar industry. 

The University of Oklahoma is Norman's largest employer and its impact on the community is far-reaching. University-related cultural and sporting events draw thousands of visitors to Norman and with nearly 13,000 employees; the University of Oklahoma plays a major role in the economy of Norman. Enrollment at the Norman Campus exceeded 32,000 student in the Fall of 2025, with record-breaking freshman class size for several years in a row.

Sooner football isn't the only game in town, Norman is also the host to dozens of other cultural and sporting events. The Medieval Fair, Norman Music Festival, and Jazz in June are just a few of the events that draw thousands of visitors to Norman each year. Beyond special events, many visitors come in to Norman to eat, shop, or work.

Accolades & Celebrations

A Great Place to LIVE:

Norman is frequently recognized in various national media outlets as a great place to live. The City of Norman has invested millions in infrastructure improvements through various bond programs and other initiatives. We have also invested heavily in quality of life initiatives through our NORMAN FORWARD program, improving and adding many new parks and recreational amenities in our city. Our community partners in education and healthcare have also expanded greatly in recent years with significant expansions at Norman Public Schools, Moore Norman Technology Center, the University of Oklahoma, and the Norman Regional Hospital System.  

Accolades: 
Groundbreakings & Ribbon Cuttings:
  • In October 2024, Norman Public Schools broke ground on the new facility for the Oklahoma Aviation Academy (OAA), a state-of-the-art facility approved by Norman voters in February 2023. Norman Public Schools launched the Oklahoma Aviation Academy, a comprehensive aviation and aerospace program for high school students in 2022, in partnership with the University of Oklahoma, Moore Norman Technology Center and industry partners from the public and private sectors.
  • The Norman Emergency Communications & Operations Center (ECOC) celebrated its grand opening in August 2024.
  • The Young Family Athletic Center (YFAC) celebrated its grand opening in early 2024! The YFAC is a 122,000 square foot multi-purpose sports facility featuring eight basketballs courts (or 12 volleyball courts), two indoor pools and more. The Young Family Athletic Center furthers the citizen-initiated NORMAN FORWARD mission to fund and create quality of life projects for the community. The $43M center also received a generous $4 million donation from the Trae Young Family Foundation
  • The Adult Wellness & Education Center (nicknamed the AWE) opened in November 2023. This $12.4M project was part of the NORMAN FORWARD initiative. 
  • The Norman Transit Center celebrated its grand opening in October 2023.
  • The Norman Solid Waste Facility celebrated its grand opening in September 2023. 
  • Renovations on Reaves Park baseball and softball fields were completed in March 2023. 
  • In the fall 2022, the University of Oklahoma broke ground on Love's Field, a new $42  million softball stadium. 
  • In February 2022, the City of Norman celebrated the opening of several new facilities including the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, the Transit & Public Safety Maintenance building, and the Park Maintenance building.   
  • Norman Regional Health System kicked off their Inspire Health Plan in 2019 to modernize the hospital systems services. The first first new facility, a free-standing emergency room, opened in 2022. Known as Norman Regional Nine, the facility is located in southeast Norman, near the intersection of Highway 9 and Classen/Highway 77. 
  • Ruby Grant Park, a new community park in northwest celebrated its grand opening in December 2020.
