Frequently Asked Questions
What is a transfer station?
The transfer station is a structure built within City limits to maximize efficiency for City trash collection vehicles to empty loads without directly going to the Oklahoma City landfill. The transfer station improves efficiency by consolidating waste for fewer, larger hauls to the landfill, helping keep the City of Norman cleaner and more sustainable. This adds multiple benefits including being able to continue waste collections in the case of inclement weather, reducing mileage on Collection Vehicles, and reduced travel time on service collection routes throughout the City of Norman. The transfer also provides an important role in managing waste for communities close to the City of Norman.
What is the difference between a transfer station and a landfill?
The transfer station is developed for the City of Norman to be a temporary stop where trash is collected and then transported to a landfill. The landfill is the final, long-term disposal site where trash is buried and contained.

How are rates determined for residents and non-residents?
Rates are determined by making sure the customer is a paying utility customer for the City of Norman having a current utility bill and driver’s license to show at the time of service. If customer is not a resident of the City of Norman, then non-residential rates will apply for services. Rates were recently adjusted to keep pace with increased demand and to remain comparable with those of similar cities. As a best practice, and in maintaining fiscal responsibility as a public agency, rates are set with consideration to the true cost of doing business in terms of sorting, hauling and maintaining vital equipment.
Why do residents receive a discounted rate?
City of Norman utility customers already contribute to municipal sanitation services through their regular utility payments, which is why the residential transfer station rates are lower than those charged to non-residents.
What rates is rental property waste charged?
Rental property waste brought to the transfer station by the property owner is considered commercial waste and will be charged at the standard or commercial rate.
What are rates for mattress drop off?
Residents can bring 1 free mattress or set (mattress + boxspring) to transfer station per day. Residents must pay $25 each for every additional mattress or set. If a non-resident drops off only a mattress or mattress set, they must pay $25 per set. If the non-resident has additional items, they must pay the standard rates (listed above) PLUS the $25 mattress set fee.
