Brown Bag Lunches
The City of Norman, Development Services’ staff conducted Brown Bag Lunches with the Builders Association of South Central Oklahoma (BASCO) and its members to discuss the most commonly disapproved inspection items for Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical and Building categories. The Brown Bag Lunches began in January 2013 and were held on a monthly basis through May 2013. We will continue to hold meetings on a quarterly basis.
The intent of the lunches/meetings was to review and discuss the inspection items and identify the most problematic inspection items and come to a consensus about those items amongst the parties. City Staff identified the most commonly Disapproved (DP) inspection items for each of the four categories; Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical and Building. BASCO members submitted specific questions or concerns to be discussed for those items.
The Electrical Inspection Items were discussed on January 30, 2013 and again on February 27, 2013. The Plumbing Inspection Items were discussed on March 27, 2013. The Mechanical Inspection Items were discussed on April 25, 2013, and the Building Inspection Items were discussed on May 30, 2013.
A consistent item identified and concluded from each of the four Brown Bag Lunches was the need for better communication among all parties. This included better communication between Trade Contractors and Building Contractors as well as between the Trade and Building Contractors and the Building Inspectors. Communication is crucial to the efforts of a successful inspection process. The new technology implemented in the Development Services Division, including On-Line Inspection Services and the Mobile Field Inspection System that is utilized by the Building Inspectors on their laptops in the field, will aid in that communication and allow the parties to enter and view comments in near real-time.
