Cleveland County Veteran’s Memorial
(CCVM)

On November 11, 2002, Veteran’s Day, the Cleveland County Veteran’s Memorial Site located at Reaves Park in Norman, Oklahoma was dedicated. The memorial will stand at the Southwest corner of Reaves Park, near the Kidspace Playground. The CCVM Project Committee already has a design and a location, and they are now in the process of raising funds for construction. The entire project will be privately funded. When completed, it will become a permanent public monument honoring the service and sacrifice of all veterans connected with Cleveland County, Oklahoma—World War One to the present day.

Click for a Top-Down ViewEstimated cost for the CCVM is $350,000. The project is being completed in phases, with the first phase starting with the construction of a granite plaza featuring a five-pointed star approximately 30 feet across. Each point of the star represents a branch of the United States Armed Forces. At the center of the star, a large pentagon monolith will rise up and be topped with Click for a Side Viewa bronze sculpture. The walls of the monolith will bear the names of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, our honored Killed in Action and Missing in Action. The names of all other Veterans will be on smaller monoliths that form a wall around the plaza. Also circling the large star will be 46 smaller stars representing Oklahoma as the 46th state of the United States. Walkways, flagpoles, and granite benches are also included in the plan—making an inviting site for visitors to linger, enjoy and honor those to whom so much is owed. (Click here for a Side View. This memorial is long overdue for Veterans of Cleveland County, Oklahoma. Every man and woman who has and still is serving in our country’s armed forces has sacrificed; and some have or will be called upon for the ultimate sacrifice. This memorial that is begun now must be built to remind all who see it what cost there is to freedom. It will honor Cleveland County Veterans for generations to come.
