Tree are an integral component of Norman’s urban environment, and their importance to the community has long been recognized. In 1891, a Norman ‘improvement society’ was organized for the purpose of “beautifying said city by planting trees, shrubbery, etc”. During a period from 1892 – 1908, David Ross Boyd, first president of the University of Oklahoma, personally planted thousands of trees. The attractiveness of the city is his living legacy.
