FALL 2008 FREE TREE GIVEAWAY

Thanks to Houston-based Apache Foundation and the Tree Bank Foundation, up to 875 Norman households will be able to receive a new tree this fall – FREE of charge. The program is open to private residences only, and only one tree per household is allowed.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR THIS PROGRAM?

Any citizen living within the corporate limits of Norman is eligible to receive a tree. Citizens MUST REGISTER with the City so that all addresses can be verified.  Because trees are being distributed as part of a grant and as part of the City’s NeighborWoods program, they are only available for private, residential properties, and not for businesses or public lands.  Residents who received trees at our April 2008 free tree giveaways are not eligible.

WHAT KIND OF TREES ARE AVAILABLE?

When you register for a tree, you must rank, in order of preference, at lease six trees, otherwise you may not be guaranteed a tree.  Species available at this free tree giveaway are as follows:  Pink Velor Crapemyrtle, Carolina Sapphire Cypress, Bald Cypress, Leyland Cypress, Bloodgood London Plane, Autumn Blaze Red Maple (All taken), Bur Oak, Sawtooth Oak, Shumard Oak, Swamp White Oak, Chinese Pistache (All taken), Eastern Redbud (All taken), American Sweetgum, Shoal Creek Vitex (All taken).   Click SPECIES INFORMATION   for details on each species.   Please choose a species that will “fit” your space at its mature growth.

HOW TO GET A FREE TREE

Citizens who want a tree must register.   Registration begins October 14th at 9:00 a.m.  Registration will last only as long as our inventory lasts.

There are two ways to register:

Click HERE to register online.  If you do not have access to the internet, call 366-5473 or 366-5472.

Staff will begin processing registration as quickly as registration closes.  All addresses registered will be verified with the City’s GIS system.   If your address qualifies you for the program, and you were within the first 875 to register, you should be receiving a tree. Trees are available on a first-registered, first-served basis based upon the date and time of registration.

You will be sent a numbered confirmation in the mail or by email. The confirmation will include the tree species you will receive.  Because we do not know ahead of time how many trees of each species we will be receiving, we cannot guarantee anyone’s tree preferences.

DISTRIBUTION DATE

Trees will only be available for pick-up on Friday, November 7th, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  To pick up your tree, please bring your registration confirmation and a photo ID, and /or proof of address (water bill).

Unfortunately we cannot deliver trees.  If you are not able to pick up your tree on the distribution date, you must make arrangements to have someone do it for you on that day…That person will have to have YOUR confirmation information and YOUR proof of address with them.    Trees cannot be held past the designated distribution period.

WHERE DO I PICKUP MY TREE?
Reaves Park – 215 East Constitution

Enter Reaves Park off of Constitution Street and follow the signs.   Staff will meet your car, check you off the distribution list and direct you to the distribution area.

The trees are approximately 1” caliper (diameter of trunk) and are set in 3-gallon containers. You should be able to transport your tree using a medium to large-sized car, small truck or SUV.   Trailers and large trucks are not necessary and may be too big for distribution area.

Volunteers will be available to assist people in getting the trees to their cars. Please note, the distribution is a “drive-through” operation, so there is no need to get out of your vehicle.

HOW DO I PLANT MY TREE?
Each citizen will be provided with a packet of take-home information on tree care and maintenance, including specific planting and watering instructions.  Remember, before planting any tree, citizens are asked to call Oklahoma One-Call System to mark the location of any buried utility lines: 1-800-522-OKIE.
