CITY HALL CLOSED JULY 4TH

Norman City Hall will be closed in observance of the 4th of July holiday. The Sanitation Division route crews and Recycle America crews will be working regular schedules on Friday, July 4th, 2008.

PROPOSED HISTORIC PRESERVATION GUIDELINES

Citizens are encouraged to download a copy of the proposed Historic Preservation Guidelines (i.e. the “rules only” section of the more detailed Norman Historic Preservation Handbook), a side by side comparison of the current & proposed guidelines, and to review other information. The proposed guidelines are the first major update since 1998. Information on the proposed guidelines was presented to the City Council in a study session on June 17. The Mayor announced that Council Member Dillingham intends to hold a Ward 4 meeting to discuss the proposed guidelines prior to future Council deliberation. The Ward 4 meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 30 at 6:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers at 201 West Gray. The previously stated date for City Council deliberation of July 8 has been postponed to allow for the Ward 4 meeting. For more information on the process and copies of the documents click here.

FRONTAGE ROAD STUDY

The City Council conducted a study session on Tuesday, June 12, 2007, to discuss the concept of One-Way Frontage Roads along Interstate Highway I-35 from Main Street to Tecumseh Road. This subject was prompted by recent discussions involving (1) transportation improvements for the University North Park development, (2) upcoming improvements to I-35 and associated Norman interchanges by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and (3) general traffic congestion and safety concerns at Robinson and I-35 as well as other interchanges. At the conclusion of the study session, the City Council directed staff to prepare a resolution for ODOT supporting the one-way frontage road concept.

RECYCLE NORMAN

The City of Norman's Curbside Recycling program is currently underway. Residents are reminded that they can crush cans and milk cartons to conserve space within the recycling container. Also, when loading your container, remember to place the heaviest objects on the top of your recycling materials to help contain the items. If you would like to request a lid or exchange your bin for one with wheels, please call the Sanitation Department at 329-1023. The Sanitation Department is maintaining a list of customers requesting lids and they will be distributed as soon as they are received. The Sanitation Department is also maintaining a list of customers requesting a wheel kit. The Sanitation Department personnel will assemble the wheel kits on containers and then exchange the wheeled containers with customers requesting them. ROBINSON RAILROAD UNDERPASS PROJECT

The Environmental Assessment (EA) examines the anticipated social, economic and environmental effects of the proposed project. The draft form of the EA has been approved by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. In order to finalize the EA, the document needs to be publicly displayed and comments taken until March 21, 2008. To view the Environmental Assessment click here.

A public meeting presenting the Environmental Assessment was held at 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, March 6, 2008, at the Concord Missionary Baptist Church located at 1500 Stubbeman Avenue, Norman, Oklahoma.

STORM WATER MASTER PLAN

The City of Norman looks forward to completing a comprehensive, in-depth study which will serve as a basis for a Storm Water Master Plan to be developed in 2008. This plan will provide key information to assist in understanding and preparing for key issues such as flooding, water quality, and many more. Citizen input is a crucial part of this process too.
