NFD Smoke Detector Program

Smoke Detectors Save Lives:
Smoke detectors save lives and should be in every home. Working smoke detectors cut the chances of dying in a fire in half. While almost all homes in the U.S. have at least one smoke detector, roughly two-thirds of reported home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke detector or smoke detectors that do not work.
Testing and Maintenance
- Test detectors at least once a month by pushing the test button.
- Replace all smoke detector batteries at least twice a year. If detector “chirps” warning the battery is low, replace them right away.
- Replace all smoke detectors when they are 10 years old or sooner if they do not respond properly.
Installation
- Install smoke detectors in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level, including the basement.
- A qualified electrician must install smoke detectors that operates on household current.
- The Norman Fire Department provides free smoke detectors to the elderly, disabled and those that cannot afford them.
