24th Avenue East Roadway Construction Begins Monday between Lindsey Street and Robinson Street

Beginning Monday, September 23, 2019, the roadway widening project located between Lindsey Street and Robinson Street will begin construction.  During Phase 1 of the project, two-lane traffic will be maintained on the existing 2-lane roadway while the two new northbound lanes are being constructed.  Once this work is completed in the spring of 2020, traffic will be shifted to the two new lanes while the existing roadway is removed and replaced with the new southbound lanes.  During the initial phase of construction, a few storm pipeline road crossings will require temporary closures of 24th Avenue East; separate press releases will be sent out in advance of this work.
History of the Project
On August 28, 2012, the citizens of Norman approved a bond issue to finance the local share of eight transportation/stormwater improvement projects.  The 24th Avenue East Widening Project was one of these bond projects.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) conducted a bid opening on June 20, 2019, for both phases of the 24th Avenue East Project, located from Lindsey Street to Robinson Street.  The low bidder was Silver Star Construction Company of Moore, Oklahoma in the amount of $9,437,000 for the combined projects.  ODOT awarded these projects at the July 1, 2019, Transportation Commission Meeting. This project has a 270-calendar day construction schedule, which will likely result in a late summer or early fall 2020 completion.  ODOT is administering the construction of this project because federal transportation funds are being used.  ODOT selected local engineering firm, EST, to oversee the Construction Management for this project.

The project involves the following items:
•         Widen two miles of roadway from two lanes to four lanes
•         Intersection improvements at 24th Ave. East/Meadowood Boulevard and 24th Avenue East /Robinson Street
•         Interconnect traffic signals on 24th Avenue East from Lindsey St. to Robinson St.
•         Continuous sidewalks and accessibility
•         Stormwater improvements
•         On-street bike lanes
