Tom Kovach
Councilmember Tom Kovach: A longtime resident of
Ward 2, Councilmember Tom Kovach has lived in Norman for more than four
decades and is the Customer Service Manager of Astronomics, a leading
U.S. dealer and producer of quality optics. He graduated from the
University of Oklahoma with a degree in Letters. He is the son of the
late Dr. Francis Kovach, a Hungarian immigrant and retired professor of
philosophy at OU, and his late wife, Elizabeth. Councilmember Kovach
began service on the City Council on July 1, 2008.
Ward Two includes the area west of I-35 between Main
Street and the southern City limits and borders Berry Road on the east
from Main Street to Imhoff Road and south of Imhoff Road the eastern
boundary is Chautauqua Avenue.
Councilmember Kovach understands the character and
values of our community and feels preserving them requires the knowledge
and experience to manage the needs of a growing city without sacrificing
the countless qualities that make it such a great place to live. His
many years of local involvement in a wide range of important community
issues such as the Citizens Coalition on the Future of Wastewater and
the Community Dialogue process, as well as his participation in the
Citizens Academy, have given him the necessary background to balance
those needs.
Working with people from all walks of life and
helping them find solutions to problems they face is something for which
Councilmember Kovach is well prepared. To bring lasting solutions on
Council he believes in honesty and fairness, open and respectful
communication, and a willingness to hear all sides of an issue with an
open mind. He terms Norman's greatest asset to be the many citizens who
give so freely of their time and energy to make this a great city.
Councilmember Kovach serves as Council's
representative to the Animal Oversight Committee and is a member of the
Council Oversight Committee and the Transportation Committee.
Tom and his partner, Will Weir, have been active with
many of the social service agencies in Norman. They are members of the
Unitarian Universalist Community Church. They enjoy nothing better than
mule riding in New Mexico.
